Prof Dato' Dr Haron Ahmad was one of the pioneer students to study medicine at the National University of Malaysia (UKM) and graduated in 1979. In 1983, Dato’ Dr Haron was in the first batch of postgraduate students to undertake the University’s first Master of Surgery programme and graduated in 1986. Later, he studied at Tokyo University hospital to specialize in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. He then received a scholarship to further his studies in Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery at The Royal Postgraduate Medical School of London (Hammersmith Hospital) and at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary from 1990 to 1992. Dato’ Dr Haron Ahmad was a member of the Surgical Department of UKM from 1980 to 2002. He was also the Head of the Department of Surgery in the National University and the first Malaysian to promote laparoscopic surgery for the gall bladder procedure. Dato’ Dr. Haron was also one of the first Malaysian surgeons to bring the ERCP procedure to Malaysia and collaborate with Dr. Norman and Dr. Paul Wigman of Fort Lauderdale Florida, and an established centre at KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital.
