Meningococcal disease, caused by the bacterial species Neisseria meningitidis, is an infection that primarily attacks the lining of the brain and spinal cord, called meninges. The infection can cause inflammation of the meninges (meningitis) which can lead to severe and often fatal complications. The symptoms can range anywhere between fever, headache, neck stiffness to altered mental state in serious cases.
The disease is preventable by vaccination, which helps the body to fight infection and reduce the possible complications. The vaccine is recommended to be taken by all children and adults, boosted every two to three years, especially before traveling. It is mandatory to get the meningococcal vaccine before traveling for hajj and umrah (Islamic Pilgrimage). Influenza is a viral infection that is prevalent seasonally and has an annual occurrence. Caused by the highly contagious respiratory virus, the disease can range from mild flu to severe complications that may require hospitalization, depending on a person’s age and overall health status. Underlying conditions, being the age of 65 and over, weak or compromised immune system are all high risk factors for influenza infection.
Influenza vaccination helps to prevent the serious complications that may result from infection, by helping to produce antibodies against the virus. The vaccination is recommended for all children over the age of 2 and adults, till the age of 65. It's strongly advised to take the vaccination dose every year.
