Product Overview

Introduction of Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet 60s (Box)

Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet is a combination oral antidiabetic medication containing two active ingredients — Sitagliptin (50mg) and Metformin Hydrochloride (500mg) — that work together to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of medicines that combines a DPP-4 inhibitor with a biguanide, making it a dual-action tablet commonly prescribed alongside diet and exercise. Like most medicines, it may cause some side effects in certain people, including nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, and in rare cases, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) — especially if taken with other diabetes medicines. If you're wondering whether this tablet is right for you, how often to take it, or what to watch out for, you're in the right place — we've put together everything you need to know in simple, clear language so you can feel confident and informed before you start.

How to Take Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet

Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet should be taken orally with meals to help reduce the chance of stomach upset, which is a common experience when starting Metformin-containing medicines. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water — do not crush, chew, or split the tablet unless your doctor or pharmacist has specifically advised otherwise. Always follow your doctor's prescribed instructions regarding timing and frequency, as individual dosing may vary based on your health condition and kidney function.

Dosage of Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet

The typical recommended dose of Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet is one tablet taken twice daily with meals, though your doctor may adjust the dosage based on your current blood sugar control, kidney function, and overall treatment plan. Never self-adjust your dose — always consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your diabetes medication routine.

Shelf Life of Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet

Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet generally has a shelf life of 24 months (2 years) from the date of manufacture when stored under the recommended conditions. Always check the expiry date printed on the packaging before use, and do not consume the tablet if it has passed its expiry date, even if it appears unchanged in appearance. Expired medicines should be disposed of safely and responsibly — do not flush them down the drain or throw them in regular household waste.

How to Store Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet

  • Store Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet at room temperature, below 30°C, in a cool and dry place.
  • Keep the tablet away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture — avoid storing it in bathrooms or near kitchen sinks.
  • Always keep the medicine in its original packaging with the lid tightly closed to protect it from humidity.
  • Store out of reach and sight of children at all times.
  • Do not store in a refrigerator or freezer unless specifically instructed by your pharmacist.
  • If you notice any changes in the tablet's colour, texture, or smell, do not use it and consult your pharmacist for a replacement.

  • Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nose and throat)
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Joint pain (arthralgia)
  • Back pain

Rare but Serious Side Effects (Seek Immediate Medical Attention):

Contraindications of Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet

  • Hypersensitivity or allergy to Sitagliptin, Metformin, or any of the excipients in the formulation
  • Renal impairment or kidney disease — particularly in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below the threshold recommended by your doctor (Metformin is contraindicated in significant renal dysfunction)
  • Hepatic impairment (severe liver disease or abnormal liver function)
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic pre-coma
  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus
  • Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including lactic acidosis
  • Dehydration or conditions associated with significant fluid loss (e.g., severe vomiting, diarrhoea, fever)
  • Congestive heart failure requiring pharmacological treatment or haemodynamic instability
  • Recent myocardial infarction (heart attack) or conditions associated with hypoxia (low oxygen levels in tissues)
  • Excessive alcohol consumption — increases the risk of lactic acidosis with Metformin
  • Before and after iodinated contrast media procedures — Metformin should be temporarily discontinued before radiological procedures involving contrast dye; consult your doctor
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding — use is generally not recommended; consult your doctor for safer alternatives
  • Patients under 18 years of age — safety and efficacy have not been established in paediatric populations

📌 Always inform your doctor about your full medical history, current medications, and any known allergies before starting this medicine.

Drug & Food Interactions of Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet

Drug Interactions:

  • Insulin and Sulphonylureas (e.g., glibenclamide, glipizide) — concurrent use may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia; dose adjustment may be required
  • Iodinated contrast agents — Metformin should be stopped before procedures involving contrast dye to reduce the risk of lactic acidosis; restart only after kidney function is confirmed normal
  • Corticosteroids (e.g., prednisolone, dexamethasone) — may raise blood glucose levels and reduce the effectiveness of antidiabetic medicines
  • Diuretics (especially thiazides and loop diuretics) — may impair blood sugar control and increase the risk of hyperglycaemia
  • Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) — may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia, making it harder to detect low blood sugar
  • ACE inhibitors and ARBs — may have an additive blood-glucose-lowering effect; monitor blood sugar closely
  • Cationic drugs (e.g., digoxin, amiloride, morphine, vancomycin) — may compete with Metformin for renal tubular secretion, potentially increasing Metformin plasma levels
  • Alcohol — significantly increases the risk of lactic acidosis with Metformin; avoid excessive alcohol consumption
  • NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen) — may affect kidney function and alter Metformin clearance
  • Rifampicin — may reduce the plasma concentration of Sitagliptin, potentially reducing its effectiveness

Food Interactions:

  • Alcohol — avoid or strictly limit alcohol intake while on this medication, as it can trigger lactic acidosis and affect blood sugar unpredictably
  • High-carbohydrate or sugary foods — while not a direct drug-food interaction, consuming large amounts of refined carbohydrates can counteract the blood-sugar-managing effects of this medicine
  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice — no established major interaction, but it is always wise to discuss your diet with your doctor or pharmacist

💬 Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about every medicine you take — including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements, and vitamins — to avoid potentially harmful interactions.

Quick Tips for Sitavio-M 50/500mg Tablet

  • Always take this tablet with food to minimise stomach-related side effects like nausea and diarrhoea
  • Never skip doses — consistency is key in managing blood sugar levels effectively
  • Check the expiry date on the packaging before every use and never take expired medicine
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture — avoid bathroom cabinets
  • Keep it out of reach of children at all times — store in a secure location
  • Do not share your medication with others, even if they appear to have similar symptoms or conditions
  • Inform your doctor before any surgery or medical procedure, as Metformin may need to be temporarily stopped
  • Carry a medical ID or card indicating that you are on antidiabetic medication, especially if you are at risk of hypoglycaemia
  • Monitor your blood sugar regularly as advised by your doctor and keep a record to share during follow-up visits
  • Avoid excessive alcohol — it increases the risk of lactic acidosis and can unpredictably affect blood sugar
  • Do not crush or split the tablet unless specifically advised by your healthcare provider
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember — but if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Never double up on doses
