Product Overview

Introduction of Cerumol Ear Drops 10ml

Cerumol Ear Drops is a trusted over-the-counter ear care product that belongs to the class of cerumenolytic agents — medicines designed to soften and break down hardened earwax. The active ingredient in this formulation is chlorobutanol and arachis oil (peanut oil), which work together to gently loosen stubborn wax buildup in the ear canal. Like most topical ear preparations, some users may experience mild side effects such as localised irritation, a temporary warm or stinging sensation in the ear, skin redness around the ear canal, or in rare cases, an allergic reaction — especially in individuals sensitive to peanut-derived ingredients. If you're someone who struggles with blocked or uncomfortable ears and is looking for a gentle, pharmacist-recommended solution, this product is worth knowing about — but it's always a good idea to read the label carefully and check with your pharmacist if you have any concerns before using it.

How to Take Cerumol Ear Drops
Cerumol Ear Drops are intended for topical use in the ear canal only and should never be swallowed or applied to broken or irritated skin. To use, tilt your head to one side, gently pull the outer ear upward and backward to straighten the ear canal, and carefully instil the recommended number of drops into the affected ear. It is advisable to remain in the tilted position for a few minutes after application to allow the drops to penetrate and soften the wax effectively.

Dosage of Cerumol Ear Drops
The generally recommended dosage is 5 drops instilled into the affected ear, used up to twice daily for up to 3 consecutive days or as directed by your pharmacist or healthcare provider. Do not exceed the stated dose, and if symptoms persist beyond the recommended treatment period, seek professional medical advice promptly.

Shelf Life of Cerumol Ear Drops
Cerumol Ear Drops typically have a shelf life of 3 years from the date of manufacture when stored correctly and kept unopened. Once the bottle has been opened, it is generally recommended to use the product within 28 days and discard any remaining solution after that period, as the efficacy and sterility of the drops may no longer be guaranteed beyond this timeframe.

How to Store Cerumol Ear Drops

  • Store at room temperature below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use to prevent contamination.
  • Do not refrigerate or freeze the product.
  • Store in a dry place, away from areas of high humidity such as bathrooms or near kitchen sinks.
  • Keep out of reach and sight of children at all times.
  • Do not use the product if you notice any visible changes in colour, consistency, or smell, as this may indicate the product has degraded.

Active Ingredient of Cerumol Ear Drops
The active ingredients in Cerumol Ear Drops are:

  • Chlorobutanol (5% w/v) — a mild antiseptic and preservative agent that also helps to soften earwax
  • Arachis Oil (Peanut Oil) (57.3% w/v) — a natural emollient that lubricates and softens hardened cerumen (earwax) to facilitate its natural removal

⚠️ Important: This product contains arachis oil (peanut oil). It should not be used by individuals with a known allergy to peanuts or soya.

Side Effects of Cerumol Ear Drops
While Cerumol Ear Drops are generally well tolerated when used as directed, some users may experience side effects. If any reaction feels severe or persistent, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild localised irritation or itching inside the ear canal
  • Temporary warm or tingling sensation upon application
  • Slight discomfort or fullness in the ear during treatment

Less Common Side Effects:

  • Skin redness or inflammation around the outer ear
  • Contact dermatitis (skin reaction) in sensitive individuals
  • Temporary dizziness or imbalance, particularly if drops are too cold upon application

Rare but Serious Side Effects:

  • Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) — symptoms may include rash, swelling, difficulty breathing, or severe itching, particularly in individuals with peanut or soya allergies
  • Ear canal irritation or chemical burn if used on perforated eardrums or broken skin

Contraindications of Cerumol Ear Drops

  • Individuals with a known allergy to peanuts, soya, or any of the listed ingredients in the formulation
  • Patients with a perforated eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation) or a history of eardrum perforation
  • Individuals who have grommets (ear tubes) or have recently undergone ear surgery
  • People experiencing active ear infections, discharge from the ear, or pain that has not been assessed by a healthcare professional
  • Children under the age of 1 year unless specifically advised by a doctor
  • Individuals with known hypersensitivity to chlorobutanol or any other component of the product

Always consult your pharmacist or doctor before use if you are unsure whether this product is suitable for you.

Drug & Food Interactions of Cerumol Ear Drops

As Cerumol Ear Drops are a topical preparation applied locally in the ear canal, the risk of systemic drug or food interactions is considered to be very low. However, the following points should be noted:

  • Concurrent use with other ear drops or ear preparations should be avoided unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional, as combining products may alter efficacy or increase the risk of irritation.
  • Individuals taking oral anticoagulants (blood thinners) or those with known systemic allergies should exercise caution and inform their pharmacist of all current medications before use.
  • There are no known significant food interactions associated with Cerumol Ear Drops due to its topical route of administration.
  • If you are using prescription ear medications alongside this product, always seek pharmacist or physician guidance to avoid any potential incompatibility.

Quick Tips for Cerumol Ear Drops

  • Warm the bottle slightly by holding it in your hands for a minute or two before use — cold drops can cause temporary dizziness.
  • Always check the expiry date on the packaging before using the product.
  • Do not share your ear drops with others — this is a personal hygiene product and sharing increases the risk of infection.
  • Once opened, label the bottle with the opening date and discard after 28 days.
  • If you are unsure whether your eardrum is intact, consult a pharmacist or doctor first before using any ear drops.
  • Do not insert cotton buds or any objects into the ear canal during or after treatment, as this can push wax deeper.
  • Store the product away from children and in a cool, dry location out of direct sunlight.
  • If you experience sudden pain, hearing loss, or discharge during treatment, stop use immediately and seek medical advice.
  • Read the full patient information leaflet included in the packaging before starting treatment.
  • Purchase only from licensed pharmacies or verified online pharmacies to ensure you receive an authentic, properly stored product.

About Cerumol Ear Drops 10ml

Earwax is also known as cerumen. It is a substance produced in the ears with lubricating and antibacterial properties which provides protection.

Earwax naturally moves up and out of the ear with the movements caused by talking and chewing. These earwax will move along the ear canal and remove debri and dead skin cells along the way. However, the production of earwax varies for each individuals and in some occasions, some people may experience an excess of earwax production.

Earwax buildup can cause blockage. These can be treated by several methods and here are some tips to cleaning the ears at home:

  1. Use solutions which can dissolve wax such as the Cerumol Ear Drops 11ml, or others like mineral oil, baby oil or saline solutions.
  2. Clean the outside of the ear by wiping with a cloth. DO NOT insert the cloth, a cotton bud or any other equipments into the ear canal. This will only push the earwax further in and cause more impaction.
  3. Irrigating and syringing the ear with water or saline solution is usually done after the earwax has been softened or dissolved. This method is preferably done after supervision and instruction by a trained healthcare provider. Note that this shouldn't be attempted if the eardrums are or suspected to be perforated.
