Actinic Keratosis

Overview

An actinic keratosis is a rough, scaly, erythematous lesions arising on chronically sun-exposed sites. They are common in fair skin people who has had significant exposure to sun and the risk increases with age.

Signs and Symptoms

Rough, dry or scaly spots of skin less usually around 3-11mm over sun-exposed site, Flat or raised bump on skin, Hard wart-like surface, Color are varied as pink, red or brown, Itching or burning on the affected area

Common Causes

Chronic sun exposure, Ultraviolet radiation

Risk Factors

Older than 40, Lives in a sunny place, History of frequent or intense sun exposure or sunburn, Red or blond hair and blue or light-colored eyes, Tend to get freckles or sunburn when exposed to sunlight, Personal history of an actinic keratosis or skin cancer, Weak immune system as a result of chemotherapy, leukemia or AIDS, Fair skin type
