Acute Attack Of Migraine

Overview

Migraine is one of the most common disabling neurological conditions that can have a major impact on one's quality of life. It can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head. Migraine has been described as a chronic disorder that is characterized by attacks.

Signs and Symptoms

Moderate to severe often unilateral pulsating headache lasting 4 to72 hours, Some might have aura before headache, Nausea and vomitting, Photophobia, Phonophobia

Common Causes

Imbalance in brain chemicals, Hormonal changes in women, Drinks: alcohol, caffeine, Stress, Sensory stimuli: bright lights, loud sound, strong smell, Sleep changes, Physical factors: intense physical exertion, Medications: oral contraceptives, vasodilators, Food: cheese,salty and processed food

Risk Factors

Family history, Sex: common in females, Hormonal changes: before or during menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, improves after menopause.

Treatment and Prevention

Oral triptan with NSAIDs or Paracetamol, Monotherapy: oral triptan/NSAIDs/paracetamol, Antiemetic: Dopamine receptor antagonist (metoclopramide), Lithium, Ergot, SSRIs
