Acute Coronary Syndrome

Overview

Acute coronary syndrome describes a few heart conditions due to sudden, decreased blood supply to the heart. Heart attack is one of the conditions that can happen. It is a medical condition which requires prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Signs and Symptoms

Chest pain or discomfort, Pain spreading from chest to the jaw or arms, Shortness of breath, Heavy sweating, Nausea or vomiting, Dizziness, Fainting, Fatigue

Common Causes

Buildup of cholesterol plaques on the walls of the arteries supplying the heart muscles, Blood clot from other blood vessels blocking the blood flow to heart muscles

Risk Factors

High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Diabetes, Unhealthy diet, Lack of physical acitivity, Being overweight or obese, Smoking or having a family member who smokes, Excessive alcohol intake, Increasing age, Family history of heart disease or stroke, History of high blood pressure or diabetes during pregnancy

Investigation Techniques

Blood test for cardiac enzymes (troponin T and troponin I), Electrocardiogram (ECG), Stress test to measure how well the heart works when you exercise, Echocardiogram, Coronary angiogram, Computerised tomography (CT) angiogram, Myocardial perfusion imaging

Treatment and Prevention

Lifestyle changes, Manage risk factors, Medications such as antiplatelets, thrombolytics, nitroglycerin, beta blockers, statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), Angioplasty and stenting, Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
