Allergic Rhinitis

Overview

Allergic Rhinitis or hay fever is inflammation of the inner wall of the nasal cavity. This problem usually happens due to hypersensitivity to one or more types of allergens such as pollen or dust mites. Allergic Rhinitis is not a serious condition, however, it can complicate respiratory problems such as asthma or life-threatening if accompanied with anaphylaxis.

Signs and Symptoms

Itchiness, Sneezing, Runny nose, Nasal congestion, Inability to smell, Postnasal drip, Headache, Red nose with watery discharge, Red eyes, Presence of nasal crease due to repeated rubbing of the nose

Common Causes

Hypersisitivity to: Pollen, Dust, Animals especially furry ones or Certain food

Risk Factors

Family history of allergies, Atopy, Environmental factor such as exposure to cigarette smoke at an early age

Investigation Techniques

Allergen test, IgE antibody, Blood eosinophil count

Treatment and Prevention

Avoid allergen, Antihistamine during attack, Decongestant, Immunotherapy for severe disease
