Bacterial Eye and Ear Infections

Overview

Bacterial infection can develop in any parts of the eye. Symptoms of bacterial infection of the eyes include redness of the affected eye, swelling, pain or discomfort, itchiness, eye discharge, light sensitivity, and visual disturbances. Eye infection due to bacteria is usually managed with oral antibiotics or antibiotic eyedrops. Putting a cool and moist washcloth on closed eyes for a few times a day, flushing the eyes with saline, and avoiding contact lenses for some time may also help. A bacterial ear infection can develop in the ear canals. Symptoms of a bacterial ear infection includes pain in the ear, discharge from the ear, ‘fullness' in the ear, itchiness, hearing loss, fever, and fatigue. A bacterial ear infection is treated with ear drops or cream, and painkillers such as ibuprofen. Besides that, patients are advised to clean the ear canal and keep it empty and dry. Any discharge should be wiped with cotton wool.
