Cold Sores

Overview

Cold sores are more commonly known as fever blisters which is due to viral infection. These blisters are tiny, usually scattered on and around your lips, some may clump together and form patches. After these blisters break, crusting will take place and result in sores. The most common virus that causes this is the Herpes Simplex Virus and they can be contagious via close contact such as kissing.

Signs and Symptoms

Intermittent fever, Tingling and itching around the lips, Blisters appearing on and around the lips, Oozing and crusting after blisters break, Painful eroded gums, Sore throat, Headache, Muscle aches, Swollen lymph nodes

Common Causes

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1)

Risk Factors

Immunocompromised individuals (AIDS/Cancer chemotherapy), Eczema, Severe burns

Treatment and Prevention

Antiviral cream (Acyclovir or Penciclovir), Oral antiviral medications (Valacyclovir, Acyclovir or Famiciclovir), Avoid sharing personal items such as towels with others, Always practise good hand hygiene, Avoid touching other parts of the body after touching cold sores
