Frequent Urination

Overview

Frequent urination is also known as polyuria. People who have this problem usually urinate more than 4 to 8 times per day. They may also feel thirsty more often. This problem can affect people of all age groups. However, it is seen more often in middle-aged people and pregnant women. There are a number of reasons which result in frequent urination. Some of the conditions include urinary tract infection, benign prostatic hyperplasia, pregnancy, diabetes, use of certain medications such as diuretics, kidney disease, diabetes insipidus, excessive caffeine and alcohol intake, overactive bladder syndrome, and anxiety. Frequent urination itself is not a life-threatening condition, but it may cause inconvenience, embarrassment and sleep disturbances. It is usually managed by treating the underlying medical condition. Some lifestyle changes may also be needed, for example reducing the intake of caffeine and alcohol, avoiding too much fluid intake before bed and kegel exercises.
