Fungal Infections Of Mouth Thrush

Overview

Fungal infections of the mouth happen when there is an overgrowth of yeast in the mouth. It is also known as oral thrush. It is commonly due to Candida albicans and hence also known as Oral Candidiasis.

Signs and Symptoms

White spots or deposits on the mucous membrane of the mouth, Discomfort or burning sensation in the mouth, Bleeding due to scraping of the white deposits, Redness of the mucous membrane

Common Causes

HIV infection, Diabetes mellitus, Chemotherapy

Risk Factors

The weakened immune system, Diabetes mellitus, Cancer treatment such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, Antibiotics, Excessive mouthwash use, Steroids medication, Using dentures, Dry mouth, Malnutrition, Smoking

Investigation Techniques

Examination of mouth, Biopsy of the affected area, Examination of the sample under a microscope, Throat swab and culture

Treatment and Prevention

The antifungal medication, Practice good oral hygiene, Warm salt water rinse, Avoid using mouthwash
