Overview

Gastritis is an inflammatory condition stomach lining. It is a common presenting complaint in clinical practice and can be debilitating to patients. It has various classifications such as Acute or Chronic Gastritis. For most people, it can be improved quickly with medical and conservative treatment.

Signs and Symptoms

Burning pain in epigastric area that can be relieved or worsened by eating, Nausea/ Vomiting, Fullness after eating

Common Causes

Stress, Excessive Alcohol Intake, Old age, Other medication such as steroids, Prolonged and frequent use of painkillers, Autoimmune condition such as Pernicious Anaemia, Dietary intake such as spicy food, Other diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Parasitic infection

Investigation Techniques

Not usually done but Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and biopsy can be conducted to look for the presence of H.Pylori.

Treatment and Prevention

Lifestyle changes such as reduce alcohol consumption, do activities that can reduce stress, reduce dietary intake such as spicy food Reduce usage of painkillers such as NSAIDS. Oral over-the-counter medications: Antacids Treatment for refractory Gastritis: Antihistamines or Proton Pump Inhibitor
