Hepatic Amoebiasis

Overview

Hepatic Amoebiasis is an extraintestinal manifestation of Entamoeba histolytica infection which is transmitted through the fecal-oral route. It causes an abscess in the liver and hence also known as amoebic liver abscess.

Signs and Symptoms

Diarrhea, Dysentery, Abdominal pain, Nausea, Vomiting, Fever, Hepatomegaly, Liver tenderness

Common Causes

Entamoeba histolytica infection

Risk Factors

Living in a contaminated area, Poor hygiene, Crowding, Unprotective sex, Travel to endemic areas, Immunocompromised

Investigation Techniques

Physical examination, Full blood count, Liver function test, Ultrasound of liver, Stool microscopy, CT scan

Treatment and Prevention

Antibiotics, Percutaneous needle aspiration or drainage, Liver surgery
