Inflammation Of Gums

Overview

Inflammation of the gums refers to the swelling of the gums also known as gingivitis. Gums are firm, pink tissue that is full of blood vessels that cover the bottom part of the teeth and jawbone. It is mainly due to poor oral hygiene. Other risk factors that cause inflammation of the gums are older age, smoking, poor nutrition, dry mouth, immunodeficiency disorders, poor nutrition, pregnancy, impacted tooth and infections of the mouth. Signs and symptoms that are associated with inflammation of the gums are swollen gums, a dark discolouration of the gums, painful gums, gum bleeding, receding gums, and a loose tooth. This condition can be prevented by practising good oral hygiene such as brushing the teeth at least twice a day, flossing, rinsing the mouth well after meals and drinking lots of water. Besides that, rinsing the mouth with saltwater and cold compressions helps to soothe the inflammation.
