Intestinal Amoebiasis

Overview

Intestinal Amoebiasis is a parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. It spreads through the fecal-oral route. There are also extraintestinal manifestations of the disease such as hepatic amoebiasis, brain abscess, and lung abscess.

Signs and Symptoms

Abdominal pain, Diarrhea, Dysentery, Nausea, Vomiting, Fever

Common Causes

Entamoeba histolytica infection

Risk Factors

Living in a contaminated area, Poor hygiene, Crowding, Unprotective sex, Travel to endemic areas, Immunocompromised

Investigation Techniques

Physical examination, Stool examination, and microscopy, Full blood count, Ultrasound, CT scan, Colonoscopy

Treatment and Prevention

Antibiotic, Practice good hygiene and sanitation, Practice hand washing at all times, Drink only boiled water
