Microcytic Anaemia

Overview

Microcytic anemia is a condition that happens when the size of the red blood cells appears to be smaller than normal. This condition can be detected from a blood smear where a layer of blood is smeared onto a glass slide then observed under a microscope. Microcytic anemia can be a problem as a smaller red blood cells means less oxygen. This in turn can cause extreme fatigue, dizziness, pale and shortness of breath which if left untreated can hinder daily activities.

Signs and Symptoms

Fatigue, Dizziness, Short of breath, Headache, Irregular heartbeat, Low blood pressure, Muscular weakness, Brittle nail

Common Causes

Iron deficiency anemia, Anemia of chronic disease, Thalassemia, Sideroblastic anemia

Risk Factors

Imbalance iron content in diet, Menstruation, Pregnancy, Gastrointestinal bleeding

Investigation Techniques

Full blood count, Peripheral blood smear, Iron panel tests, Haemoglobin typing, Bone marrow examination

Treatment and Prevention

Blood transfusions, Iron therapy
