Multiple Myeloma

Overview

Multiple Myeloma is a type of blood cancer where it starts in the bone marrow and forms in a type of blood cell called the plasma cell. These cells grow out of control, build up and forms a tumour.

Signs and Symptoms

Bone pain, Constipation, Loss of appetite, Confusion, Fatigue, Frequent infections, Weight loss, Weakness or numbness in legs, Excessive thirst

No known cause

Risk Factors

Increasing age, Male gender, Family history of multiple myeloma, History of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS)

Investigation Techniques

Full blood count, Blood film, Urine tests, Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, X-ray, MRI, CT scan, Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Treatment and Prevention

Chemotherapy, Targeted therapy on specific abnormalities within the cancer cell that allow them to survive, Corticosteroids, Radiation therapy, Bone marrow transplant
