Overview

Nasal congestion happens when breathing through the nose is obstructed. It is a common problem affecting all age groups. It is a symptom that can cause discomfort and sleep disturbances. Nasal congestion is usually caused by increased mucus discharge, inflammation of blood vessels, polyps and tumours. Common conditions causing these symptoms include common cold, sinusitis, flu, enlarge adenoids, allergies, exposure to irritants, changes to temperature and certain medications. Nasal congestion is usually managed by treating the underlying conditions and avoiding triggers. There are a few ways to relieve nasal congestion. Nasal saline products can be used to reduce dryness. Antihistamines and nasal corticosteroid sprays can also be used to relieve symptoms. An air humidifier is recommended during colder months due to the dry weather.
