Precocious Puberty Premature Puberty

Overview

Precocious puberty is a condition where the child begins to attain puberty way earlier than the normal range of age. This includes attaining puberty before 8 years old in girls and before 9 years old in boys.

Signs and Symptoms

Breast growth and first period in girls, Enlarged testicles and penis/facial hair and deepening voice in boys, Pubic or underarm hair, Rapid growth, Acne, Adult body odor

Common Causes

A tumor in the adrenal glands, McCune-Albright syndrome, Ovarian cysts, Ovarian tumors, Gonadotropin-independent familial sexual precocity, A tumor in the cells that make sperm (germ cells) or in the cells that make testosterone (Leydig cells), Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Hypothyroidism

Risk Factors

Female, Being African-American, Obesity, Being exposed to sex hormones,Having received radiation therapy of the central nervous system, Having other medical conditions

Investigation Techniques

Blood tests to measure hormone level,Physical examination, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Thyroid function test, Sex steroid levels

Treatment and Prevention

GnRH analogue therapy, Leuprolide acetate, Triptorelin
