Quitting Smoking

Overview

Smoking puts you at an increased risk of developing many medical conditions. Therefore, the sooner you quit smoking, the better it is for your health. There are many ways to quit smoking. Nicotine replacement therapy is one of the methods. It contains a low level of nicotine without the other poisonous contents found in tobacco products. It is available in the form of chewing gum, skin patches, lozenges, tablets, nasal or mouth spray, and inhalators. Some people may experience side effects with the use of nicotine replacement therapy, for example, irritation of the skin or nose, headaches, dizziness, and insomnia. Other methods include medications such as varenicline and bupropion. These medications can help to reduce your cravings for nicotine and block the rewarding effects of smoking. Besides that, smokers can also join support groups, avoid places where people smoke, and distract yourself when you have cravings for nicotine.
