Relapsing Forms Of Multiple Sclerosis Ms

Overview

Relapsing Forms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is characterized by unpredictable attacks or relapses of the active disease with incomplete recovery during the periods of remission or with no remission. There are two types, the relapsing-remitting MS and the progressive-relapsing MS.

Signs and Symptoms

Sensory loss, Muscle cramp, Numbness or weakness in the limbs or body, Tingling sensation, Speech abnormalities, Tremors, Bilateral facial weakness or twitching, Fatigue, Dizzy, Pain, Bladder dysfunction, Erectile dysfunction, Constipation, Blurry vision, Double vision

Common Causes

Genetic susceptibility, Environmental factors (Epstein Barr virus infection, low vitamin D, brain and spine blood supply insufficiency)

Risk Factors

Age of 15 to 60 years, Female gender, Genetic factors, Family history, Infections like Epstein-Barr virus, Autoimmune disease, Climate, Vitamin D deficiency, Smoking

Investigation Techniques

MRI brain and spine, Cerebrospinal fluid examination by lumbar puncture, Blood tests to rule out other diseases, Neurophysiologic studies, Fundoscopy

Treatment and Prevention

Lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and stop smoking, Symptomatic treatment, Intravenous immunoglobulin, Steroids, Immunomodulatory Therapy ( Interferon, Ocrelizumab), Physical therapy, Occupational therapy, Vitamin D supplement
