Schistosoma Infections

Overview

Schistosomiasis is a condition caused by Schistosoma parasites which enters the human by penetrating through the skin.Disease develops after contact with contaminated freshwater (swimming,washing) and move around through the venous system of portal veins where the parasites will multiply by laying eggs.

Signs and Symptoms

Fever, Abdominal pain (liver/spleen area), Bloody diarrhea or blood in the stools, Cough, Malaise, Headache, Rash, Body aches

Parasites of the genus Schistosoma

Risk Factors

Poor hygiene, Poor socioeconomic, Agricultural and fishing populations, Doing domestic chores in infested water

Investigation Techniques

Stool or urine specimens, Blood culture, ELISA, Blood serological test, PCR test, Complete blood count, Liver function tests, Renal function tests

Treatment and Prevention

Praziquantel, Steroids
