Varicose Veins

Overview

Varicose veins are enlarged tortuous veins and most commonly seen in the legs. There are several cause for this condition and usually varicose vein is always secondary to another condition. However prolong standing also can cause this condition.

Signs and Symptoms

An achy or heavy feeling in your legs, Throbbing or muscle cramping in your lower legs , Worsened pain after sitting or standing for a long time , Itching around one or more of your veins , Skin discoloration around a varicose vein

Common Causes

Primary mechanical factors, Secondary to obstruction (DVT, Fetus, Pelvic tumour), Arteriovenous malformations, Overactive muscle pumps (Cyclists), Congenital valve absence

Risk Factors

Menopause, Pregnancy, Age over 50, Prolonged standing, Family history of varicose veins, Obesity

Investigation Techniques

Doppler test , Color duplex ultrasound scan

Treatment and Prevention

Compression stockings , Sclerotherapy , Foam sclerotherapy of large veins , Catheter-assisted procedures using radiofrequency or laser energy , High ligation and vein stripping , Ambulatory phlebectomy , Endoscopic vein surgery
