Wilms Tumor

Overview

Wilms Tumour is also known as nephroblastoma or embryonal renal neoplasm. It is a childhood cancer and occurs commonly during the first 7 years of age. Mostly they are unilateral where they only affect one kidney but it may occur bilateral as well.

Signs and Symptoms

Palpable abdominal mass usually at the flanks, Abdominal pain, Fever, Loss of appetite, Hematuria (blood in urine), Diarrhea, Edema of limbs and superficial veins, High blood pressure

Common Causes

Genetic , Birth defect syndromes

Risk Factors

Family history, Gene changes, Syndromes such as Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome or WAGR syndrome, Race or ethnicity

Investigation Techniques

Full blood count , Peripheral blood smear, Urine microscopy, Ultrasound abdomen, X-ray abdomen, Intravenous urography, CT scan

Treatment and Prevention

Nephrectomy, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy
