Drug/Food Interactions
Potassium depletion might amplify the effect of cardiac glycosides and alter the effectiveness of antiarrhythmics in cases of prolonged usage or misuse. Potassium loss can be accelerated when certain diuretics, cortisone or cortisone-like drugs (adrenocortical steroids), and licorice roots are used together. The absorption of medications given at the same time from the gastrointestinal system into the bloodstream may be delayed. Insulin-dependent diabetics may need to reduce their insulin dosage.
Warning Precautions
Contraindicated among patients with abnormal stenoses in the gastrointestinal tract, ileus, diabetes mellitus that is difficult to control, acute inflammatory intestinal diseases eg, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, appendicitis, abdominal pain of unknown cause, severe dehydration with water and electrolyte losses, children <10 years. Longer use may aggravate any gastrointestinal sluggishness that already exists. Only use this product if a change in diet or the usage of bulking agents have failed to relieve constipation.
