Product Overview

Introduction of Epiduo Gel 15g

Epiduo Gel is a combination topical retinoid and antimicrobial gel that belongs to the class of acne treatment medications, formulated with two active ingredients — adapalene and benzoyl peroxide — working together in a single application. It is a clinically recognised prescription-strength gel that has been widely used in dermatological practice. Like most acne treatments, Epiduo Gel may cause some side effects, and the most commonly reported ones include skin dryness, redness, a mild burning or stinging sensation, and skin peeling, especially during the early weeks of use. If you are considering this product, it is good to know that it is typically used once daily, it requires a prescription, and your skin may need a short adjustment period before it settles in — so don't be discouraged if the first few weeks feel a little uncomfortable. Always speak with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this gel to make sure it is right for your skin type and condition.

How to Take Epiduo Gel

Epiduo Gel is for external use only and should be applied directly to the affected area of clean, dry skin. Use a thin layer of the gel once daily, typically in the evening, and gently spread it over the entire affected area — not just individual spots. Always wash your hands before and after application, and avoid contact with the eyes, lips, mouth, and nostrils, as the gel may cause irritation to these sensitive areas.

Dosage of Epiduo Gel

The generally recommended dosage for Epiduo Gel is one thin application to the affected skin area once daily, preferably in the evening after cleansing the face. Your doctor may adjust the frequency based on your skin's tolerance and response to the treatment, so always follow the specific dosage instructions provided by your prescribing physician or pharmacist.

Shelf Life of Epiduo Gel

Epiduo Gel typically has a shelf life of 2 years from the date of manufacture when stored under the recommended conditions. Once opened, the gel should ideally be used within 6 months. Always check the expiry date printed on the packaging before use and do not use the product beyond its stated expiration date, as the active ingredients may lose their effectiveness or potentially cause unintended skin reactions.

How to Store Epiduo Gel

  • Store Epiduo Gel at room temperature, between 15°C and 25°C, in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture.
  • Do not freeze the gel, and keep it out of reach of children and pets at all times.
  • Avoid storing it in humid environments such as bathrooms, as moisture and heat can affect the stability and quality of the formulation.
  • Always keep the tube tightly closed when not in use.

Active Ingredient of Epiduo Gel

Epiduo Gel contains two active pharmaceutical ingredients:

  • Adapalene 0.1% — a third-generation topical retinoid that helps regulate skin cell turnover
  • Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5% — an antimicrobial and keratolytic agent that targets acne-causing bacteria on the skin surface

Together, these two ingredients form a dual-action combination that addresses multiple factors associated with acne development. The gel base also contains inactive excipients that support the formulation's texture, stability, and skin compatibility.

Side Effects of Epiduo Gel

As with all medicines, Epiduo Gel may cause side effects in some users. Not everyone will experience them, and many side effects tend to improve as your skin adjusts over time. Below are the known side effects associated with this product:

Common Side Effects:

  • Skin dryness and flakiness at the application site
  • Redness or erythema of the treated skin
  • Mild to moderate skin irritation or stinging sensation
  • Burning feeling upon application
  • Skin peeling or desquamation
  • Itching (pruritus) at the application site

Less Common Side Effects:

  • Sunburn sensitivity or increased photosensitivity
  • Skin swelling or oedema at the treated area
  • Contact dermatitis or allergic skin reaction
  • Skin discolouration or temporary hyperpigmentation
  • Worsening of acne during the initial adjustment phase (purging)
  • Dry or chapped lips if gel comes into contact with the lip area

Rare but Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) — symptoms may include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face and throat
  • Severe skin blistering or peeling beyond normal adjustment
  • Significant skin inflammation or eczema-like reaction

⚠️ If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, discontinue use and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Contraindications of Epiduo Gel

  • You have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, or any of the excipients in the formulation
  • You have eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis, or other chronic inflammatory skin conditions on the area to be treated
  • You have sunburned, broken, or severely irritated skin at the intended application site
  • You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant — retinoid-containing products are generally not recommended during pregnancy; always consult your doctor
  • You are breastfeeding — seek medical advice before use as a precautionary measure
  • You are using other topical retinoids or exfoliating acne treatments simultaneously without medical supervision, as this may increase the risk of skin irritation

Always disclose your full medical history, current medications, and skin conditions to your doctor or pharmacist before using Epiduo Gel.

Drug & Food Interactions of Epiduo Gel

Drug Interactions:

  • Other topical acne products containing retinoids, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or sulphur — concurrent use may increase skin irritation and dryness
  • Topical antibiotics — your doctor may prescribe these alongside Epiduo Gel, but unsupervised combination use should be avoided
  • Oral retinoids (e.g., isotretinoin) — using Epiduo Gel while on oral retinoid therapy is generally not recommended due to additive irritation risk
  • Medicated or abrasive cleansers and toners — products containing alcohol, astringents, or strong exfoliants may worsen skin dryness and irritation when used together with Epiduo Gel
  • Waxing or chemical hair removal products — avoid using on areas treated with Epiduo Gel as the skin may be more sensitive and prone to injury

Food & Lifestyle Interactions:

  • Sun exposure — Epiduo Gel increases photosensitivity; prolonged sun exposure without adequate SPF protection may lead to sunburn or skin damage
  • Tanning beds or UV light therapy — avoid during treatment as this can intensify skin sensitivity
  • There are no known significant food interactions with Epiduo Gel due to its topical nature

Always inform your healthcare provider about all skincare products, supplements, and medications you are currently using before starting Epiduo Gel.

Quick Tips for Epiduo Gel

  • ✅ Always apply to clean, dry skin — wait at least 20–30 minutes after washing your face before applying the gel to reduce irritation
  • ✅ Use a pea-sized amount for the face — a little goes a long way with this gel
  • ✅ Apply sunscreen daily (SPF 30 or above) while using Epiduo Gel, as your skin will be more sensitive to UV rays
  • ✅ Start slowly — if your skin is sensitive, your doctor may recommend applying every other day initially before moving to daily use
  • ✅ Avoid getting the gel near your eyes, mouth, and nostrils — rinse with water immediately if accidental contact occurs
  • ✅ Do not use on broken, sunburned, or eczema-affected skin
  • ✅ Keep the tube tightly sealed after each use and store it away from heat and direct sunlight
  • ✅ Do not freeze the product — freezing may alter the gel's consistency and reduce its effectiveness
  • ✅ Check the expiry date before use and dispose of the product responsibly once expired
  • ✅ Keep out of reach of children — store in a secure location at all times
  • ✅ Do not share your medication with others, even if they have similar skin concerns — this is a prescription product tailored to your condition
  • ✅ Be patient with the process — skin adjustment may take a few weeks; consult your pharmacist if you have concerns about your skin's response
