Chlortalidone Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advisable to consume alcohol with Chlortalidone. This will cause further worsen the side effects such as drowsiness, lightheadedness or fainting.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

It is not advisable to use Chlortalidone during pregnancy as reports have shown foetal bone marrow depression, thrombocytopenia and jaundice associated with the use of thiazide diuretics.

Lactation Not Advisable

Chlortalidone will be secreted into the breast milk and shown to be associated with neonatal jaundice. Thus, the usage of Chlortalidone is not advisable during breastfeeding.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Chlortalidone may cause side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness, all of which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Use With Care

Dose adjustment may be needed in elderly patients with moderate kidney impairment. Its usage is not advisable in patients with severe kidney impairment (Creatine clearance less than 30ml/min). Please consult your doctor before using.

Liver Use With Care

Dose adjustment may be needed in patients with liver impairment and progressive liver disease. Please consult your doctor before using.

What should I avoid when taking Chlortalidone?

If you are taking Chlortalidone, it is important not to consume too much salt in your food because this can stop your medication from working as well as it should. It is advised not to consume salt substitutes as they contain a high amount of potassium which can interfere with certain medications and cause side effects. Some medications can cause you to lose potassium. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you should take food or supplements high in potassium unless you are on medication that retain potassium then you would not need extra potassium.

Is it safe to take Chlortalidone when I am ill?

If you find yourself to be ill with a fever (a high temperature above 38 degree celcius), with sweats, vomitting or have severe diarrhoea, contact your doctor as you may need to stop taking Chlortalidone until you are better. You can resume taking Chlortalidone when you are eating and drinking normally. If you take Chlortalidone when you are ill, it may cause dehydration and it can worsen your condition.
