Deferiprone is commonly used to treat iron overload in transfusion dependent thalassemia.

How Deferiprone Works

Deferiprone is a chelating agent that involves binding with ferric ions to form a complex which is then removed via urine.

Side Effects of Deferiprone

Reddish- brown discolouration of urine, Abdominal pain, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Dyspepsia, Musculoskeletal pain, Sore throat, Dizziness, Headache, Pruritus, Urticaria.

Alcohol Limited Data

Certain food and medications will have interactions with concurrent use of Deferiprone but there is no specific data stating so. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Animal studies have shown embryotoxic and teratogenic potential on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Lactation Limited Data

Deferiprone is probably unsafe to use during lactation. Deferiprone excretion into human milk is unknown but it is advisable to stop breastfeeding if treatment with Deferiprone is necessary.

Driving Generally Safe

Dasabuvir has negligible effect on your ability to concentrate and drive. You are allowed to drive unless you feel dizzy and headache.

Kidney Use With Care

Although there is no information regarding the effects of renal impairment on the metabolism of Deferiprone, Deferiprone should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Deferiprone may be needed. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Liver Limited Data

Deferiprone should be used with caution in patients with liver disease by monitoring of liver function. Treatment will be altered if there is a persistent rise in serum ALT. Please consult your doctor before using it.
