Erythromycin is commonly used in the treatment of bacterial eye infections, bacterial infections, bacterial skin infections and toxoplasmosis during pregnancy

How Erythromycin Works

Erythromycin is an antibiotic. Erythromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It does so by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit irreversibly. This stops the translocation or transpeptidation and results in stunted cell growth.

Side Effects of Erythromycin

Abdominal pain, Diarrhea , Nausea, Vomiting, Pseudomembranous colitis, Hepatic dysfunction, Urticaria, Skin rashes, Vertigo, Tinnitus, Ventricular arrhythmias

Erythromycin Related Warnings

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Erythromycin. However, consuming Erythromycin with alcohol may delay its absorption. Please consult your doctor before use.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Use of Erythromycin is acceptable during pregnancy. Animal reproduction studies do not demonstrate adverse effects on the fetus, and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women. This medication should only be used when there is a clear indication of infection. Please consult your doctor before use.

Lactation Safe If Prescribed

Erythromycin is probably safe to use during lactation. Erythromycin is shown to be excreted in breast milk but only low concentration of the medication is found in fetal plasma. However, this medication should still be used with caution. Please consult your doctor before use.

Driving Generally Safe

Erythromycin usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Erythromycin is safe to be used in patients with kidney impairment.

Liver Safe If Prescribed

Erythromycin should be used with caution in patients with liver disorder. Dose adjustment of Erythromycin may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
