Uses of Ondansetron

Ondansetron is commonly used to treat nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or post- surgery.

How Ondansetron Works

Ondansetron is blocks 5-HT3-receptor on both vagal nerve terminals in the periphery and in the brain's chemoreceptor trigger zone or also known as the vomitting centre.

Side Effects of Ondansetron

Headache, Flushing, Constipation, ECG changes, Rash

Ondansetron Related Warnings

Alcohol Safe

There's no known drug interactions between alcohol consumption and Ondansetron. However, do consult your doctor before using it.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Ondansetron may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Lactation Limited Data

Ondansetron is excreted into the breastmilk of animals however there is inadequate data on human studies. Hence, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Driving Generally Safe

Ondansetron cause minimal to no side effects which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

The pharmacokinetics of Ondansetron is not significantly affected in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Ondansetron may not be needed. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Liver Limited Data

Ondansetron should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Ondansetron may be needed. Please consult your doctor before using it.
