Orlistat is commonly used to treat obesity.

How Orlistat Works

Orlistat inhibits the absorption of dietary fats through the formation of a covalent bond with the active serine residue site of the pancreatic and gastric lipases. This will prevent the hydrolysis of dietary fat in the form of triglycerides into absorbable free fatty acids and monoglycerides.

Side Effects of Orlistat

Flatulence, Fecal incontinence, Fatty stools or discharge, Headache, Anxiety, Fatigue, Urinary tract infection, Menstrual disturbances.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol while taking orlistat. There are no changes in alcohol pharmacokinetics, orlistat pharmacodynamics or systemic exposure to orlistat.

Pregnancy Not Safe - High Risk

Both human and animal studies have reported fetal abnormalities and the risks to fetus clearly outweigh potential benefits to the mother. Orlistat is contraindicated in pregnancy because the weight loss may cause harm to the fetus.

Lactation Limited Data

It remained unknown whether orlistat is excreted in human breast milk, therefore it is recommended to avoid the usage of Orlistat during breastfeeding.
