Uses of Pioglitazone

Pioglitazone is commonly used in treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

How Pioglitazone Works

Pioglitazone is peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha� (PPAR-alpha�) agonist. It activates this receptor and promotes the production of products involved in lipid and glucose metabolism. It also improves the response of insulin on target cells.

Weight gain, Sinusitis, Edema, Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Visual disturbances, Abnormal Liver Function Test

Pioglitazone Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not recommended to take alcohol with this medication as alcohol may affect blood glucose levels.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Limited data is available on the safety of pioglitazone in human pregnancy. Studies in animals show fetal growth restriction with administration of this medication. Therefore, pioglitazone is not recommended to be used in pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks.

Lactation Limited Data

Studies have shown that pioglitazone is excreted in the breastmilk of lactating rats. However, no data is available on human milk. Therefore this medication is not recommended in breastfeeding mothers.

Driving Generally Safe

Pioglitazone has not shown to cause impairment in the ability to drive or operate machines. However, as it may cause visual disturbance, patients experiencing this side effect should be cautious and only drive when feeling well.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

No dose adjustment needed in a patient with kidney impairment.

Liver Limited Data

Pioglitazone should not be used in a patient with liver impairment.
