How Tamoxifen Works

Tamoxifen is an oestrogen receptor inhibitor which is able to prevent the binding of oestrogen onto the oestrogen receptors. It can also prevent DNA synthesis in tumour cells

Side Effects of Tamoxifen

Hot flushes, Gut disturbances, Fluid retention, Nausea, Vaginal bleeding or discharge, Skin rash, Alopecia, Headache, Thromboembolism event, Menstruation suppression, Liver enzyme dysfunction

Tamoxifen Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

There is no known interaction between alcohol and Tamoxifen when used concomitantly. However, alcohol may accentuate the hot flushes or dizziness caused by Tamoxifen. Thus, it is not advisable to consume alcohol if the patient is experiencing side effects from Tamoxifen. Please consult your doctor.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Human studies have shown reports of spontaneous abortions, birth defects and foetal deaths from the use of Tamoxifen during pregnancy. Thus, it is not advisable to be used during pregnancy. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Not Advisable

Excretion of Tamoxifen is not known in human breast milk. Thus, it is not advisable to be used during breastfeeding. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Generally Safe

Tamoxifen usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Tamoxifen is safe to be used in patients with kidney impairment.

Liver Use With Care

Caution use has to be practised in patients with liver impairment as Tamoxifen may cause liver enzyme dysfunction. Please consult your doctor.
