Tetracycline is commonly used to treat bacterial infections and severe bacterial infections.

How Tetracycline Works

Tetracycline is an antibiotic that will bind to the 30S ribosomal subunit of the bacterial cell which will prevent the binding of tRNA to mRNA-ribosome complex and interfering the protein synthesis of bacterial cells. This will result in the cessation of bacterial activities.

Side Effects of Tetracycline

Gut disturbances, Skin rashes, Liver dysfunction, Allergy reaction, Teeth discolouration, Enamel hypoplasia, Oesophageal ulceration

Alcohol Not Advisable

Alcohol may hasten the elimination of Tetracycline which will make the antibiotic less effective. Thus, the use of alcohol is not advisable during the treatment with Tetracycline.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Human studies have shown reproductive toxicities of Tetracycline on the skeletal development of the foetus. Thus, Tetracycline is not advisable to be used during pregnancy unless necessary. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Not Advisable

Tetracycline has been shown to be excreted in human breast milk. Thus, the use of Tetracycline is contraindicated during breastfeeding. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Generally Safe

Tetracycline usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney High Risk

Dose adjustment is needed in patients with mild to moderate kidney impairment. Tetracycline is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment. Please consult your doctor.
