Scaling and polishing is recommended for all individuals every 6 months, especially if they have a lot of plaque or tartar build up on their teeth.

Scaling is the process of removing plaque or tartar from the teeth, which are white or yellow hard deposits that build up and are not easily removed by brushing. Bad breath and bleeding gums are prevented by scaling and thorough cleansing of the gums.

Although it is typically used on the teeth, scaling can also be used on the roots in a procedure called root planing. This is done especially if periodontal pockets (spaces or openings around the teeth beneath the gum line) have formed. This occurs when bacteria has already infiltrated the gums. 

Polishing, on the other hand, is the technique of smoothing the teeth, which is necessary since scaling can leave them feeling rough. During this time, the dentist may apply a small amount of fluoride to the teeth to provide additional protection.

This is a simple and mild process that will only take a few minutes but will go a long way in keeping your oral health on track if done on a regular basis as suggested.
