Gastroscopy or Upper GI Endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure to check the upper portion of the digestive system. The technique is also known as an OGDS (oesophagogastroduodenoscopy). An endoscope is a slender, flexible tube containing a light and a tiny video camera, which makes up the scope. Using the scope, the doctor sees the inside lining of your esophagus (the tube that transports food from your mouth to your stomach), stomach and duodenum (the top half of your small intestine). The procedure is usually not painful and will be performed under mild sedation (anesthesia) which can cause some minimal discomfort.
