Introduction to Travocort Cream

Travocort Cream is a combination topical pharmaceutical product that belongs to the antifungal-corticosteroid drug class, formulated to work on the skin's surface. It contains two active ingredients — isoconazole nitrate and diflucortolone valerate — which work together as a dual-action topical preparation. As with any medicated cream, there are some side effects you should be aware of, including skin irritation or a burning sensation at the application site, skin thinning with prolonged use, and in rare cases, allergic skin reactions such as contact dermatitis. If this is your first time using a corticosteroid-antifungal combination product, it's worth knowing that Travocort Cream is for external use only, should not be applied near the eyes or broken skin, and is typically prescribed for short-term use under medical supervision — so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions carefully.

How to Apply Travocort Cream

Travocort Cream is intended for external topical application only — apply a thin layer directly to the affected skin area and gently rub in until absorbed, taking care to avoid the eyes, mouth, and open wounds. Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the cream, unless the hands themselves are the area being treated. For best results and to reduce the risk of side effects, use only the amount directed by your doctor or as stated on the product label, and do not cover the treated area with an airtight dressing unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.

Dosage of Travocort Cream

The standard recommended dosage for Travocort Cream in adults is to apply a small amount to the affected area once or twice daily, as directed by a physician or as indicated on the prescribing information. The duration of treatment is typically short-term and should not exceed the period recommended by your healthcare provider, as prolonged use of corticosteroid-containing topical preparations may increase the risk of skin-related side effects.

Shelf Life of Travocort Cream

Travocort Cream has a shelf life of approximately 3 years from the date of manufacture when stored under the recommended conditions. Once the tube has been opened, it is advisable to use the product within 6 months for optimal efficacy and safety. Always check the expiry date printed on the carton or tube before use, and do not use the product if the expiry date has passed.

How to Store Travocort Cream

Store Travocort Cream at a temperature below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat or moisture. Do not refrigerate or freeze the product, as extreme temperatures can affect the stability of the active ingredients. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use, and store all medicines out of sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use a tube that shows signs of damage, leakage, or significant discolouration.

Active Ingredients in Travocort Cream

Travocort Cream contains two pharmacologically active substances that work together to address the symptoms of certain skin conditions:

Active IngredientDetails
Isoconazole Nitrate 1%An imidazole-class antifungal agent that disrupts the integrity of the fungal cell membrane, preventing the growth and reproduction of dermatophytes, yeasts, and certain gram-positive bacteria responsible for common skin infections.
Diflucortolone Valerate 0.1%A potent fluorinated corticosteroid that helps reduce local inflammation, redness, itching, and skin irritation associated with inflamed fungal skin infections. It belongs to the glucocorticoid class of topical steroids.

Both active ingredients are compounded in a cream base designed for good skin absorption while remaining gentle on the epidermal surface.

Side Effects of Travocort Cream

Common Side Effects (may affect the application site):

  • Mild burning, stinging, or itching sensation upon application
  • Localised skin redness or erythema at the treated area
  • Dryness, peeling, or flaking of the skin
  • Folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles) with prolonged use

Less Common or Corticosteroid-Related Side Effects (with extended or excessive use):

  • Skin atrophy (thinning of the skin) with prolonged topical corticosteroid application
  • Striae (stretch marks) in areas of skin folds or under occlusive dressings
  • Telangiectasia (visible dilated blood vessels under the skin)
  • Hypertrichosis (increased hair growth at the application site)
  • Perioral or periorbital dermatitis if applied near the face
  • Hypopigmentation or depigmentation of the skin (more common in darker skin tones)
  • Secondary bacterial skin infections due to immune-suppressive effect of the steroid component

Rare or Serious Side Effects:

  • Allergic contact dermatitis (hypersensitivity reaction to one or more components)
  • Systemic absorption effects (rare, particularly if applied over large skin surface areas, under occlusion, or for prolonged periods) — may include adrenal suppression
  • Cushing’s syndrome-like symptoms with extensive misuse or long-term overuse
  • Glaucoma or raised intraocular pressure if applied around the eye area

Stop using Travocort Cream and consult a doctor or pharmacist promptly if you notice any unexpected skin changes, worsening of symptoms, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling, rash, or difficulty breathing.

Contraindications of Travocort Cream

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to isoconazole nitrate, diflucortolone valerate, or any other ingredient in the formulation
  • Viral skin infections, including herpes simplex, varicella (chickenpox), or shingles (herpes zoster)
  • Tuberculosis of the skin (cutaneous tuberculosis) or syphilitic skin lesions
  • Rosacea, acne vulgaris, or perioral dermatitis — corticosteroids may worsen these conditions
  • Open wounds, ulcerated skin, or severely damaged skin surfaces
  • Application near or in the eye area, due to risk of glaucoma and elevated intraocular pressure
  • Use in neonates or very young infants, unless under strict medical supervision
  • Long-term application on the face, groin, or axillae (armpits) without medical guidance
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if prescribed by a doctor after careful risk-benefit assessment. Not recommended for extensive use during pregnancy.
  • Not recommended for use under occlusive dressings without specific medical instruction

Drug & Food Interactions of Travocort Cream

Drug Interactions:

  • Other topical corticosteroids: Concurrent use of multiple steroid-containing products on the same skin area may increase the total steroid load and the risk of systemic absorption and adverse effects.
  • Immunosuppressive agents (e.g., tacrolimus, pimecrolimus): Combining topical steroids with other immunomodulatory creams may potentiate immune suppression on the skin.
  • CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir): Although interaction via topical route is minimal, patients using systemic azole antifungals alongside topical isoconazole should be monitored.
  • Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): Corticosteroid components, if significantly absorbed, may theoretically affect anticoagulant activity — consult your doctor if you are on blood thinners.
  • Antidiabetic medicines: Systemic absorption of corticosteroids, even from topical use over large areas, may slightly elevate blood glucose levels and reduce the efficacy of antidiabetic medications in susceptible individuals.

Food Interactions:

  • No specific dietary food interactions are established for topically applied Travocort Cream under normal usage conditions.
  • Grapefruit or grapefruit juice: While not directly applicable to this topical formulation, patients on concurrent systemic corticosteroids should be aware that grapefruit may affect systemic steroid metabolism.

Always inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, herbal supplements, and vitamins you are currently taking before using Travocort Cream.

Quick Tips for Travocort Cream

  • For external use only — never apply to the eyes, inside the nose, mouth, or on broken, bleeding, or infected skin.
  • Always apply with clean, dry hands and wash hands after application unless the hands are the treated area.
  • Do not use more than the recommended amount — a thin layer is sufficient; using more does not speed up results.
  • Avoid covering the treated area with airtight or occlusive dressings unless your doctor has specifically advised this.
  • Do not share your tube of Travocort Cream with others, even if they appear to have a similar skin condition.
  • Keep the product away from children and pets — store it safely out of reach in a secure location.
  • Store below 25°C in a cool, dry location. Avoid storing in the bathroom where humidity and heat can degrade the cream.
  • Check the expiry date before each use. Discard expired or compromised tubes responsibly.
  • Once opened, aim to use the tube within 6 months for best results.
  • If you accidentally get Travocort Cream in your eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water and seek medical advice if irritation persists.
  • Do not apply on the face for extended periods without medical guidance, as the facial skin is thinner and more susceptible to steroid-related adverse effects.
  • If symptoms worsen or do not improve as expected, consult your healthcare provider rather than extending self-treatment.
  • Travocort Cream is not a cosmetic moisturiser — use it only for the skin condition it has been recommended for.
