Hi and thanks for your question. In your question you mentioned you have severe menstrual pain. Here we will cover the possible causes to both of this problem and answer your concern.
Severe menstrual pain, also known as dysmenorrhea, is excessive pain during the menstruation period.
What causes dysmenorrhea?
- Primary causes: there are no known causes for the excessive pain
- Secondary cause: fibroids (benign tumors in uterine wall as it is in your case), adenomyosis (uterine lining tissue growing inside uterine muscle), a sexually transmitted disease, endometriosis (uterine lining tissue found in other organs), a pelvic inflammatory disease (infection of the uterus, cervix, ovary and fallopian tubes), a ovarian cyst or tumor or the use of an intrauterine device or birth control method.
How are fibroids treated? - Medicine: hormonal control can prevent heavy and painful menstruation. It can come in forms of pills, patches, rings, injections and implants
- Surgery to remove the fibroids: the surgery is called a myomectomy to remove the fibroid, but the fibroids may recur.
- Endometrial ablation: it destroys the lining of the uterus, reducing the amount of bleeding during menstruation
- Artery embolization: cutting off the blood supply, causing it to shrink
- Hysterectomy: removing the uterus, irreversible and can no longer conceive.
What are things I can do to reduce dysmenorrhea? - Placing a heat pad or warm water bottle to your lower abdomen and lower back
- Taking a warm bath
- Doing mild exercises like stretching walking or biking as it may improve blood flow, thus reducing the pain.
- Getting plenty of rest
- Avoid stressful situations
- Yoga
- Alternative therapies such as hypnosis, herbal medication or acupuncture.
- Make sure that herbal medications are approved by the ministry of health as not all herbal medication are safe and have no side effects.
