The pain caused my left arm became leprous

Doctor, I want to ask. I experienced pain in my chest (on the top of my left breast side). The pain caused my left arm became leprous. Sometimes, I also feel the pain is hot. Is it related to heart problems? Or it just normal pain chest/

Hi, thank you for your question. Chest pain can mean a lot of things. In the heart, you may have a heart attack, pericarditis (inflammation of the sac around your heart) or angina (chest pain due to poor blood flow to your heart). In the lungs, you may have pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lung artery blocking blood flow) or pleurisy (pain when membrane covering the lungs get inflamed).

In the muscles and bones, you may have costochondritis (inflammation of cartilage of the rib cage). In the guts, you may have heartburn, pancreatic disease or gallbladder disease.
Different people experience heart problems differently. Some have classic chest pain. Some have jaw pain or back pain. Some only have a vague discomfort. Chest pain is only one of the symptoms of heart problems.

You should seek medical attention immediately if you experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Pressure, tightness, fullness, squeezing, burning in the centre of your chest
  • Crushing or searing pain, numbness, or other discomfort in one or both arms, back, jaw, neck, or stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Extremely fatigue
  • Cold sweat

Just knowing that you have chest pain and discomfort in the arm will not tell doctors that you have a heart problem. They will need detailed description of your symptoms, heart risk profile, results of an electrocardiogram (ECG) and troponin levels (measures a form of protein in the blood to detect heart injury) to make a diagnosis.

Chest pain can be something serious and is not something to be put off until tomorrow. Get help immediately if you think you might have a heart problem.
