What is a contraceptive cap?

A contraceptive cap is a circular dome made of latex (rubber) or silicone. It is smaller than a diaphragm, but it is also a barrier method of contraception used with spermicide (a chemical that kills sperm). Contraceptive caps come in various shapes and sizes; your healthcare provider can help you decide the shape or size that is suitable for you.

How do I use a contraceptive cap?

The contraceptive cap is inserted into the vagina before sex to cover the cervix so that sperm cannot reach the womb. The cap must be left in the vagina for at least 6 hours after sex. After this minimum duration, the cap is removed, washed and can be reused.

Using a contraceptive cap during menstruation is not recommended due to a possible risk of life-threatening complication of bacterial infections (toxic shock syndrome).

How effective is a contraceptive cap?

The contraceptive caps are 92–96% effective in preventing pregnancy if they are used correctly with spermicide. However, they have limited protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Therefore, another form of contraception is advisable if one is at a high risk of contracting STDs.
