Uses of Hypromellose

Hypromellose is commonly used to treat dry eyes and adjunct to eye surgery.

How Hypromellose Works

Hypromellose is used as artificial tears to impede cornea and conjunctiva damage due to impaired lacrimal secretions. It is also used as a visco-elastic agent by supporting the deep chamber, thus pushing the vitreous face back and preventing the existence of postoperative flat chamber.

Side Effects of Hypromellose

Eye pain, Eye irritation, Foreign body sensation, Blurred vision, Mild stinging, Ocular hyperemia, Post-op transient increase in intraocular pressure, Corneal calcification

Hypromellose Related Warnings

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol while using hypromellose.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Animal studies have shown that there is an adverse effect on the fetus, though there is limited data on the usage of hypromellose in pregnant women. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid Hypromellose during pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Lactation Safe If Prescribed

It is safe to use hypromellose during breastfeeding.

Driving Generally Safe

Hypromellose may lead to immediate blurred vision following the first usage. Thus, it is advisable to wait until the side effects are cleared before driving.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

It is safe to be used in patients with kidney problems. Dose adjustment is not required.

Liver Safe If Prescribed

It is safe to be used in patients with liver impairment. Dose adjustment is not required.
