Hair loss is also known as alopecia. It is a common problem, seen more often in men. Symptoms of hair loss include gradual thinning of the hair, excessive shedding of hair, patches of bald spots and patches of scaling. There are a number of reasons which result in hair loss, such as a family history of hair loss, hormonal changes due to menopause or pregnancy, stress, excessive hair styling, use of certain medications especially cancer treatments, scalp infections, and having certain medical conditions like alopecia areata. Hair loss is not life-threatening, but it can be embarrassing for some people. Some choose to cover it up with hats, scarves or hairstyles, while others may let it be. It is usually managed by treating the known underlying conditions. Medications available in the market include finasteride, dutasteride, and minoxidil. Other treatment options are laser therapy and hair transplant surgery.
