Hi, thank you for your question. Having pain in your lower abdomen and kidneys does not necessarily mean that you have nephritis. There are many possible causes of lower abdominal and kidney pain, such as urinary tract infection, pyelonephritis (kidney infection), kidney stones, polycystic kidney disease, blood clots in kidney or bleeding in kidney. It can also be caused by problems in other organs, digestive issues, or pelvic inflammatory disease.
If you think that you may have a recurring nephritis, you should get back to your doctor. Your doctor may refer you to a nephrologist (kidney specialist) or urologist (urinary surgeon) and they will order some tests to determine if you have any underlying problem that makes you at risk of getting recurrent nephritis.
Factors that puts you at risk of getting recurrent nephritis are if you are a woman, you have a weakened immune system, diabetes, kidney stones or a structural abnormality in your urinary tract. It is also likely that your doctor will prescribe you a low dose of antibiotics to be taken on a regular basis to prevent you from getting recurrent kidney infections.
There are other things that you can do to reduce your risk of kidney infections. First, drink plenty of water. Fluids can help to flush out bacteria from your bladder. Avoid holding your bladder and urinate as soon as you feel the urge. Empty your bladder after intercourse to clear bacteria from the urethra.
Besides, wipe from front to back after urinating. This prevents bacteria from the vagina or anus from getting into the urethra. Avoid using feminine products sich as deodarants in the genital area. Other than that, consume cranberry products. There are studies that shows that daily intake of cranberry juice can prevent recurrent urinary tract infections.
