Alucid Suspension

Alucid Suspension is a liquid antacid, where each 5ml contains Aluminium Hydroxide 800mg, Magnesium Hydroxide 800mg, and Simethicone 60mg. It belongs to the same combination-antacid product class as Alucid Tablet, pairing an aluminium salt and a magnesium salt with simethicone, an anti-foaming agent, but in a liquid dosage form rather than a chewable tablet. The suspension is typically supplied in a peppermint flavour and needs to be shaken before each use, as is standard for suspension-type liquid medicines where the active ingredients can settle over time.

Alucid Suspension is classified as an Over-the-Counter (OTC) product in Malaysia and can be bought at pharmacies without a prescription; it is listed in Malaysia’s Ministry of Health medicine price reference, confirming its standing as an established, registered pharmacy product sold in community pharmacies and licensed online pharmacies. It is commonly supplied in 100ml bottles with a measuring cap or spoon to help dose the liquid accurately.

Compared with Alucid Tablet, the suspension offers a liquid alternative for people who prefer not to chew tablets or who want a faster-acting liquid formulation, while delivering the same three active ingredients at a different concentration per 5ml dose. Both forms are part of the same Alucid product range and share a similar overall safety profile, though the exact per-dose strength differs between the tablet and the suspension.

Shake the bottle well before each use. Using the measuring cap or spoon provided, take 5ml to 10ml after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the maximum daily amount stated on the packaging, and replace the cap tightly after each use to keep the suspension from drying out.

The usual adult and adolescent (12 years and above) dose is 5ml to 10ml, taken after meals and at bedtime, up to a maximum of 4 doses (20ml to 40ml) in 24 hours unless otherwise directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Do not use continuously for more than 2 weeks without medical advice. If a dose is missed, take the next dose when needed rather than doubling the amount. This suspension is not intended for children under 12 years old unless specifically directed by a doctor, and elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function should follow a doctor’s or pharmacist’s dosing guidance rather than the standard adult dose, since both aluminium and magnesium salts rely on the kidneys for clearance. Seek medical advice if symptoms do not improve after a few days of regular use.

Store below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly capped after use and keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.

• Common: Mild constipation, associated with the aluminium hydroxide component.
• Common: Mild diarrhoea or loose stools, associated with the magnesium hydroxide component.
• Common: A chalky aftertaste following each dose.
• Serious: Signs of aluminium accumulation (such as unusual muscle weakness or confusion) with prolonged high-dose use, particularly in people with kidney impairment, which needs urgent medical review.
• Serious: Signs of high magnesium levels (such as low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, or marked drowsiness) in people with significant kidney impairment, which requires prompt medical attention.

• Known hypersensitivity or allergy to aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone, or any other ingredient in this suspension.
• Severe kidney impairment or kidney failure, where aluminium and magnesium salts can accumulate to harmful levels.
• Severe, undiagnosed abdominal pain, as antacids may mask symptoms of a serious underlying condition such as appendicitis.
• Intestinal obstruction or significantly reduced bowel motility, due to the constipating effect of the aluminium component.

• Aluminium and magnesium hydroxide can reduce the absorption of many other oral medicines, including certain antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and quinolones), iron supplements, and some heart and thyroid medicines — separate the timing of Alucid Suspension from other oral medicines by at least 1-2 hours.
• Do not take together with other aluminium- or magnesium-containing antacid products at the same time, to avoid duplicating the same active ingredients and increasing the risk of side effects.
• This suspension is generally taken after meals, so food timing is already accounted for in normal use; no other significant food-avoidance is required.
• People taking regular prescription medicines for chronic conditions should check with a pharmacist about timing this suspension around their other medicines.

• Take other oral medicines at least 1-2 hours apart from this suspension to avoid reduced absorption.

Precautions: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, elderly patients, and people with kidney disease should check with a doctor or pharmacist before regular use of Alucid Suspension, as aluminium and magnesium salts are cleared from the body by the kidneys. People on a low-sodium or fluid-restricted diet, or those with heart failure, should also seek advice first. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience unusual drowsiness, although this is uncommon with normal use.
