Fucicort Cream

Fucicort Cream is a combination topical medicine containing fusidic acid 2%, an antibiotic that targets bacteria commonly responsible for skin infections, together with betamethasone valerate 0.1%, a potent corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, redness, and itching. This dual-action formula is used for inflamed skin conditions that are infected or at risk of secondary bacterial infection, such as infected eczema, dermatitis, and similar inflammatory skin conditions where both an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory effect are needed.

Because Fucicort combines a potent corticosteroid with an antibiotic, it is a prescription medication in Malaysia and requires an official prescription from a registered doctor before it can be dispensed. A doctor’s assessment helps confirm that the skin condition is suitable for this specific combination and helps prevent overuse, which can lead to skin thinning or antibiotic resistance.

Fusidic acid works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, stopping susceptible bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus from multiplying and helping to clear the infected component of the skin condition, while betamethasone valerate suppresses the local immune and inflammatory response by reducing the release of inflammatory mediators, which decreases swelling, redness, and itching in the affected skin.

Fucicort Cream should be used strictly as directed by your prescribing doctor. A thin layer is usually applied to the affected area of clean, dry skin two to three times a day, gently rubbing it in, unless a different frequency has been specified. Hands should be washed before and after application, and the cream should not be used on broken skin, open wounds, or near the eyes unless specifically instructed by a doctor.

The dose and treatment duration depend on the severity and location of the skin condition and will be determined by your doctor, but Fucicort is generally not intended for prolonged, continuous use, particularly on the face, skin folds, or in children, due to the corticosteroid component. Treatment courses are typically kept short, often around one to two weeks, and should not be continued beyond what your doctor has prescribed without a follow-up review.

Fucicort Cream remains stable until the expiry date printed on the tube or carton when stored correctly and unopened; once opened, it should generally be used within the period stated by the manufacturer or your pharmacist, and the expiry date should always be checked before use.

Store Fucicort Cream below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, and keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children and dispose of any unused or expired cream responsibly, rather than through household waste.

• Untreated primary skin infections caused by viruses (such as herpes simplex or chickenpox), fungi, or tuberculosis
• Rosacea, perioral dermatitis, or acne vulgaris, where corticosteroids can worsen the condition
• Not for use on the eyes or in the ear canal if the eardrum is perforated
• Caution in infants and young children due to increased skin absorption

• Concurrent use with other topical corticosteroids on the same area may increase the risk of skin thinning and systemic absorption
• Inform your doctor if you are using other topical or systemic antibiotics, as combined use may affect treatment choice
• Occlusive dressings or bandages over treated skin can significantly increase absorption and side effect risk unless specifically advised
• No specific food interactions are established with topical use

• Apply only a thin layer — more cream does not mean faster healing
• Do not use Fucicort on larger areas of skin or for longer than your doctor has prescribed
• Avoid covering treated skin with airtight dressings unless told to do so
• Wash your hands after each application unless the hands are the area being treated
• Return to your doctor if the skin condition worsens or does not improve within the expected timeframe
• Do not share this cream with other people, even if their skin condition looks similar

Fucicort is intended for short-term treatment of infected inflammatory skin conditions rather than routine or long-term skin care, and its corticosteroid component means it should be tapered off or reviewed by a doctor rather than stopped and restarted repeatedly without medical guidance. Patients with chronic or recurring skin conditions should discuss a longer-term management plan with their doctor rather than relying on repeated short courses of this cream alone.
