Overview

Genotropin 5.3mg Powder and Solvent Solution for Injection is a prescription-only medicine (POM) that contains Somatropin (recombinant human growth hormone) 5.3mg. It is supplied as an injection and is dispensed in Malaysia only against a valid prescription issued by a registered doctor.

Under Malaysian rules for prescription medicines, this page carries product, safety and handling information only. Your doctor or pharmacist will explain whether this medicine is suitable for you, the dose you should take, and how long you should take it.

On DoctorOnCall, Genotropin 5.3mg Powder and Solvent Solution for Injection is reviewed by a licensed doctor through an online consultation and dispensed by a registered pharmacist before delivery. Always follow the instructions on your prescription label and the package insert supplied with the product, and do not share this medicine with anyone else.

Directions for Use

Genotropin 5.3mg Powder and Solvent Solution for Injection is a powder and solvent for reconstitution into a solution for injection, given by subcutaneous (under the skin) injection using the specific pen or device supplied with the product, as taught to you by your endocrinologist or trained nurse. Rotate injection sites as instructed to reduce the risk of local skin changes, and never share your injection pen or needles with anyone else.

Dosage

Genotropin 5.3mg Powder and Solvent Solution for Injection dosing is entirely individualised by your specialist endocrinologist, based on your age, body weight, diagnosis, and response to treatment, with periodic adjustment based on growth response, IGF-1 levels, and other monitoring results. Never adjust your dose without specific guidance from your specialist – there is no standard fixed dose for every patient.

Storage Instructions

Store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) before reconstitution. Do not freeze. Storage requirements after reconstitution vary by specific pen or cartridge device, so always follow the specific storage instructions provided with your product and the counselling given by your pharmacist or endocrinology team, rather than assuming a general storage duration.

Side Effects

  • Injection site reactions (redness, swelling, pain, or itching)
  • Headache
  • Joint pain or muscle aches
  • Mild swelling of the hands or feet (fluid retention), particularly in adults
  • Serious: signs of high blood sugar (excessive thirst, frequent urination, unusual tiredness), severe headache with vision changes or vomiting (possible sign of raised pressure in the brain), or a severe allergic reaction (swelling, difficulty breathing) require immediate medical attention

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to somatropin or any ingredient in this product
  • Evidence of active tumour growth – active malignancy should be resolved or specifically assessed before starting treatment
  • Acute critical illness following complications of open-heart or abdominal surgery, multiple accidental trauma, or acute respiratory failure
  • Children with closed epiphyses (growth plates) for growth-promotion purposes
  • Proliferative or severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Oral corticosteroids (e.g. prednisolone) may reduce the growth-promoting effect of somatropin and require dose adjustment
  • Insulin or oral diabetes medicines may need dose adjustment, as somatropin can raise blood sugar levels
  • Oestrogen-containing oral contraceptives or hormone therapy may reduce somatropin’s effectiveness in adults
  • Thyroid hormone levels should be monitored, as somatropin treatment can unmask or worsen underlying hypothyroidism

Quick Tips

  • Never adjust your dose without your specialist endocrinologist’s specific guidance
  • Attend all scheduled monitoring appointments (growth measurements, IGF-1 levels, blood glucose, and thyroid function tests)
  • Follow the specific storage instructions provided with your pen or cartridge, both before and after reconstitution
  • Rotate injection sites each time to reduce local skin reactions
  • Report any severe headache, vision changes, or persistent vomiting to your doctor promptly
  • Do not share your injection device or needles with anyone else, even family members
