Overview

Genteal Eye Gel is an OTC lubricating eye gel manufactured by Alcon and sold in Malaysia in a 10g tube. Its active ingredient is Hypromellose (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) at a concentration of 0.3%, formulated as a thicker, gel-based eye lubricant rather than a thin, watery eye drop.

The gel is dispensed from a squeezable tube fitted with a narrow nozzle designed for controlled application directly into the eye. Because it is a gel rather than a drop, it tends to stay in contact with the eye’s surface for longer than a standard liquid eye drop, which is a formulation characteristic rather than a treatment claim. As an OTC product, it can be purchased directly from a pharmacy in Malaysia without a doctor’s prescription, though anyone with an existing eye condition or recent eye surgery should check with a doctor or pharmacist before use.

Genteal Eye Gel is part of the broader GenTeal range of eye lubricant products, which also includes thinner eye drops sold under the same brand. Customers should check the specific product name and concentration on their own tube, as GenTeal products are sold in more than one formulation and strength, and inactive/excipient ingredients are not always fully disclosed in public product listings — the full ingredient list is printed on the carton and package insert.

Directions for Use

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before use. Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket.
  • Squeeze a small amount of gel into the pocket without letting the tube nozzle touch the eye, eyelid, or any other surface, to avoid contaminating the tube.
  • Close the eye gently after application and blink normally to help the gel spread evenly. If wearing contact lenses, check the product label or ask a pharmacist whether the gel is suitable for use with lenses in place, as this can vary by formulation.

Dosage

Apply a small amount of gel into the affected eye(s) as needed, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist, generally up to several times a day.

There is no fixed maximum number of applications stated for general OTC use, but if frequent application is needed throughout the day, or if symptoms do not settle, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted rather than continuing to self-manage indefinitely. Always confirm the concentration (0.3%) printed on the tube in hand, since GenTeal products are sold in more than one strength and formulation.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the tube and carton. Do not use the gel once this date has passed.

Once opened, most eye gels of this type are intended to be discarded around 4 weeks after first opening, even if product remains in the tube and the printed expiry date is still some way off — check the specific in-use period stated on the carton or package insert, as this can vary by exact formulation.

Storage Instructions

  • Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat, and keep the tube upright with the cap firmly closed between uses.
  • Avoid letting the nozzle touch any surface, including fingers or the eye itself, to reduce the risk of contaminating the remaining gel. Store out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Temporary blurred vision immediately after application, due to the thicker gel texture.
  • Common: Mild stinging or a foreign-body sensation on application.
  • Common: Slight stickiness of the eyelashes shortly after use.
  • Serious: Signs of an eye allergic reaction, such as significant redness, swelling, itching, or discharge that worsens rather than improves — stop use and seek medical advice if this occurs.
  • Serious: Any change in vision beyond brief post-application blurring, or eye pain, which should be assessed promptly by a doctor.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to Hypromellose or any other ingredient in the gel.
  • Use directly on or in an eye with a known active eye infection, injury, or recent eye surgery, without first checking with a doctor.
  • Application while wearing contact lenses, unless the product label or a pharmacist confirms the gel is suitable for use with lenses in place.
  • Use of a tube whose nozzle has visibly touched a non-sterile surface, as this can introduce contamination into the remaining gel.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant drug or food interactions have been established for topical ocular Hypromellose.
  • If using more than one type of eye drop or eye gel, leave several minutes between different products and apply them in the order advised by a pharmacist, so one product does not wash out another before it can spread across the eye.
  • Inform your pharmacist if you are using other prescription eye medications, so they can advise on the correct order and spacing of application.

Quick Tips

  • Wash your hands before every application to reduce the risk of eye contamination.
  • Never let the tube nozzle touch your eye, eyelid, or fingers.
  • Expect brief blurring right after application — this is a normal texture effect of a gel formulation, not a fault.
  • Note the date you opened the tube, and follow the printed in-use discard period rather than judging by how much gel is left.
  • Keep the cap on tightly between uses and store the tube upright.
  • If you wear contact lenses, check with a pharmacist about the correct order of applying the gel and inserting or removing lenses.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Hypromellose (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) 0.3%.
  • Formulated as a gel-based eye lubricant in a squeezable tube, manufactured by Alcon.
  • Full inactive/excipient ingredient details are printed on the carton and package insert and are not always fully disclosed in public product listings.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Individuals with an existing eye condition, those who have recently had eye surgery, and contact lens wearers should check with a doctor or pharmacist before using this gel. Expect temporary blurring of vision after application and avoid driving or operating machinery immediately afterwards until vision clears.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical advice if eye discomfort, redness, or discharge worsens or does not settle with continued use, if vision changes beyond brief post-application blurring, or if there is any eye pain, as these can indicate a condition that needs assessment beyond self-care with an OTC eye gel.
