Overview

Imdur 30mg Tablet contains isosorbide mononitrate 30mg in an extended-release (ER) formulation, a long-acting nitrate used to prevent angina (chest pain) caused by coronary heart disease. It is used for the long-term prevention of angina attacks and is not intended to relieve an attack that has already started.

Isosorbide mononitrate is converted in the body to nitric oxide, a substance that relaxes and widens blood vessels. This lowers the volume of blood returning to the heart and widens the coronary arteries, reducing the heart’s workload and improving blood flow to the heart muscle, which helps prevent angina.

How it Works

Once converted to nitric oxide, isosorbide mononitrate activates an enzyme in vascular smooth muscle that raises cyclic GMP levels, causing the muscle to relax. This dilates veins more than arteries, reducing the amount of blood returning to the heart (preload) and the heart’s oxygen demand, while also dilating the coronary arteries to improve oxygen supply to the heart muscle.

Directions for Use

Take Imdur 30mg Tablet once daily in the morning, with or without food. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew, or break it, as this can release the full dose too quickly. This medicine is for preventing angina and does not work fast enough to treat a sudden angina attack – use your doctor-prescribed fast-acting nitrate (e.g. sublingual GTN) for that purpose.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Imdur 30mg Tablet is 30mg once daily in the morning, which your doctor may increase to 60mg, and occasionally up to 120mg, once daily depending on your response. Dosing is individualised to allow a nitrate-free interval each day, which helps prevent tolerance (reduced effectiveness). Always follow your doctor’s prescribed schedule.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Imdur 30mg Tablet used for?

Imdur 30mg Tablet is used to prevent angina attacks (chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart) in people with coronary heart disease. It is a preventive, long-term treatment rather than a rescue medicine.

Can I use this medicine to treat an angina attack that has already started?

No. This extended-release tablet acts too slowly for sudden attacks. Use the fast-acting nitrate your doctor has prescribed for an acute attack, and seek medical attention if the pain does not settle.

Why do I get headaches when I start this medicine?

Headache is a common and expected effect because the medicine widens blood vessels, including those in the head. It usually becomes milder after the first few days; simple pain relief and continuing treatment as advised by your doctor usually helps.

Can I take this medicine with sildenafil or similar medicines for erectile dysfunction?

No. Combining nitrates with sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, or similar medicines can cause a severe and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure. Always tell every doctor and pharmacist that you take this medicine.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Imdur 30mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember that morning. If it is already afternoon or close to your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal morning schedule – do not double the dose or take it late in the day.
