Pabron Cough Syrup

Pabron Cough Syrup is an oral liquid preparation from the Pabron range manufactured by Taisho Pharmaceutical, sold in Malaysia as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product. Each 5ml of syrup contains Carbocisteine 250mg as its single active ingredient, together with Methyl Hydroxybenzoate used as a preservative, placing this syrup in the mucolytic class of cough and cold preparations.

The syrup is formulated as a single-ingredient mucolytic rather than a multi-symptom cold formula, which means it does not carry an antihistamine, decongestant, or added cough suppressant in its composition. It is sold as an OTC medicine in Malaysia, so it can be purchased over the counter at a pharmacy without needing a doctor’s prescription, though a pharmacist’s guidance is always worthwhile if there is any doubt about suitability.

Pabron Cough Syrup is an alcohol-free liquid formulation, which some people prefer over tablets, particularly those who find swallowing tablets difficult, and it is sold in Malaysia in a 120ml bottle. The syrup should be shaken before use and measured with an accurate oral measuring device rather than an ordinary kitchen spoon.

Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the liquid is evenly mixed. Measure the correct amount using the measuring cup or oral syringe provided with the pack, or another accurate oral dosing device, rather than a household teaspoon, which can vary considerably in size. The syrup is taken by mouth and may be taken with or without food.

Because Carbocisteine is also present in a number of other cough tablets, granules, and combination cold products sold in Malaysia, check the active ingredient list of any other medicine being taken at the same time to avoid an unintentional double dose of the same mucolytic ingredient. Ask the pharmacist to check for you if unsure.

The commonly labelled dose for adults and children above 15 years of age is 15ml, taken 3 times a day. Always confirm the exact dose against the current pack insert or as advised by a doctor or pharmacist, as dosing instructions can be updated by the manufacturer from time to time, and dosing for younger children, where labelled, is generally lower and should follow the specific pack instructions.

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as it is remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose, in which case the missed dose should be skipped rather than doubled up. Do not exceed the maximum daily dose printed on the packaging.

See a doctor or pharmacist if the cough does not improve after about 7 days, if it worsens, or if it is accompanied by high fever, chest pain, breathlessness, or blood-streaked phlegm.

Use Pabron Cough Syrup before the expiry date printed on the bottle and outer carton. Once opened, follow any in-use period stated on the pack insert if one is provided; otherwise use before the printed expiry date and discard responsibly if the liquid changes in colour, smell, or consistency.

Store Pabron Cough Syrup below 25 degrees Celsius, away from direct heat and sunlight, and out of the reach and sight of children. Keep the bottle tightly capped between uses and avoid storing it in a bathroom cabinet where humidity and temperature can fluctuate.

• Known hypersensitivity or allergy to Carbocisteine, Methyl Hydroxybenzoate (a preservative in this syrup), or any other ingredient in the formulation.
• Active peptic (stomach or duodenal) ulcer disease, unless a doctor has specifically advised otherwise.
• Not intended for infants or very young children unless specifically directed by a doctor.

• No clinically significant drug interactions are widely documented for Carbocisteine, but inform the pharmacist of all other medicines being taken, including other cough, cold, or flu products.
• Avoid taking another cough or cold medicine that also contains Carbocisteine or another mucolytic/expectorant at the same time, to prevent an unintentional double dose of the same type of ingredient.
• No specific food interactions are known; this syrup may be taken with or without food.

• Shake the bottle well before every use.
• Use the measuring cup or oral syringe provided, not a household spoon, for an accurate dose.
• Check the labels of any other cough or cold products for a duplicate mucolytic ingredient before combining them.
• Keep the bottle tightly capped and upright when not in use.
• Stay well hydrated with water throughout the day while taking this syrup.
• Note the expiry date on the bottle and discard it responsibly once it has passed.

Precautions: Use with caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and only after discussing with a doctor or pharmacist. Caution is also advised in people with a history of peptic ulcer disease, and in those with significant kidney or liver impairment, who should seek medical advice before use. Check with a pharmacist before giving this syrup to a young child.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical advice if the cough lasts longer than 7 days, keeps returning, or is accompanied by high fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, or blood in the phlegm. Stop the syrup and get urgent medical attention if signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing, occur after taking it.
